A late-season depression over the Bay of Bengal is expected to cross the coast within a day, bringing very heavy rain and strong winds. Fishing boats have been called back and relief shelters are open.

A deep depression over the Bay of Bengal is moving north-west at about 15 km/h and is expected to cross the coast between the Odisha and north Andhra Pradesh shoreline within the next 24 hours, the state weather centre said in its latest bulletin.

"This is a late-season system, but it is carrying a lot of moisture," said Dr Sunita Rao, director of the state weather centre. "The bigger risk is not the wind, it is the amount of rain falling in a short time on soil that is already wet."
